Joe sent me this bog post from Desiring God yesterday: Motherhood as a Mission Field. No matter what stage of life you are in or what job you work, I think we can all be encouraged to be faithful right where we are in life.
The following quote was especially encouraging to me in light of Jim Elliott’s quote: “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose.”
But I’d like to challenge you to look at it differently. Giving up what you cannot keep does not mean giving up your home, or your job so you can go serve somewhere else. It is giving up yourself. Lay yourself down. Sacrifice yourself here, now. Cheerfully wipe the nose for the fiftieth time today. Make dinner again for the people who don’t like the green beans. Laugh when your plans are thwarted by a vomiting child. Lay yourself down for the people here with you, the people who annoy you, the people who get in your way, the people who take up so much of your time that you can’t read anymore. Rejoice in them. Sacrifice for them. Gain that which you cannot lose in them.
Desiring God has been an encouragement to me in so many ways over the years. I posted last week about some of John Piper’s books and sermons that have been especially challenging and encouraging. Many blog posts have served as instruments in God’s hand in my life as well. On my home page, you can find a video by Lecrae which was inspired by “Don’t Waste Your Life” and produced by Desiring God under Featured Video on the bottom right hand side. I know I haven’t been updating the Featured Video much, but I hope to do so more in the coming months with videos, music, sermons, etc. which inspire me, challenge me or maybe just make me laugh.
Have a great weekend,
