FAQ: Do Your Kids Speak More Than One Language?

Since we have lived in 5 foreign countries, we haven’t made a big emphasis on the kids learning as second language.  When they do attend school, they often pick it up rather easily.  For the two season we spent in Turkey, the picked up a decent amount of Turkish.  For kids though, it doesn’t seem to matter if they know exactly what everyone is saying.

This season both Abby and Elijah go to gymnastics class.  One of the teachers there speaks some English, but for the most part, they can still be instructed through actions and body language.  If the teachers don’t mind that the kids can’t speak the language and our kids are not worried about it, we haven’t put a lot of pressure on them learning.  If the time comes where Joe signs somewhere long term, we will put in some work to learn the language of the country we are in.  But for right now, spending 9 months trying to learn a language that we will not use again hasn’t been a top priority.
